Around Rusutsu

Onsen, Niseko and the supermarket run: what is near Rusutsu

Short answer: Lake Toya is 30 to 40 minutes away, Niseko 40 to 60 minutes, and the supermarkets are toward Kimobetsu and Kutchan. Every one of them is a there-and-back trip inside a single 6-hour rental block.

Rusutsu Resort is a destination in its own right, but a short drive opens up onsen, mountain views and - the practical one - proper grocery shopping. Here is what is within reach, how long each takes, and three itineraries that fit in one block.

Three trips that fit in one 6-hour block

🛒 The supermarket run

Kimobetsu or Makkari and back, 2 to 3 hours including shopping. If you are in a condo, one run pays for itself against resort dining.

♨ Lake Toya onsen

30 to 40 minutes each way. A day-use bath and a walk by the lake, back before dinner - close to exactly 6 hours.

🗻 Niseko & Mt. Yotei

Drive past Hokkaido's own "Mt. Fuji" toward Makkari and Niseko. Spring-water parks and cafes along the way.

Why hourly makes sense here

Everything above is a few hours' round trip. Renting for whole days means paying for a car that sits in the snow while you are on the mountain. Booking the hours you actually need costs ¥13,800 for a 6-hour block, insurance and winter equipment included. You book online, take the key from a keybox with a QR code, and go. The cars are 7 and 8 seat vans (Alphard and Vellfire), all 4WD on studless tires, so a whole group and its ski gear travels in one vehicle.

Going out in the evening? Local gas stations are shut between 18:00 and 6:00, so there is nowhere to refuel late. For night trips take the fuel-included plan and skip refuelling altogether.
